 Musician David Lutalo popularly known for his song Kapapala will launch his “Akantu” album this evening at Hotel Africana. The singer who started singing at a young age and writes his own music is a favourite with the ladies thanks to his soothing voice. He is very excited about launching tonight. Speaking to Batte in a recent interview, the singer revealed what inspired his album and urged all Ugandans to come and support him tonight. “I just put myself into someone’s shoes or get a theme and sing about it because I cannot wait for the inspiration only. That is being creative. You have to create your own things. I just composed Akantu. There was no girl that left me,” he said.“I call upon all Ugandans to come and support me tonight,” Lutalo added. Akantu album features songs like Sweetie, Helena, Mubbi Bubbi, Nandikulese Mukyalo, Pretty and Far Away. We will keep you posted.

Last week the big green monster showed it's face for the exchange between UK-based Ugandan artists and DJs was re-ignited. It's the old tale of [some] artists feeling they're not getting their rightful love from the selectors in the booths. UK-based artists, they reckon, should be getting playlist priority over their Kampala-based counterparts in Ugandan clubs in UK so they should be on top of the Ugandan DJs' playlists. One artist believes it's the DJs that are keeping Ugandan artists in UK underground and the artists remain 'upcoming for 10yrs'.

Incidentally we had a similar discussion, albeit a brief one, with the publisher of Eyecon Magazine (where I also happen to have contributed to the magazine's entrainment pages for a while) only a few weeks ago. Ours was a question of how long an artist should last in that 'upcoming' transition stage. And what should happen to the artists when they reach that expiry date but are still stagnated? That decision being in the hands of club DJs is a totally new perspective to me especially since any good DJ's playlist is not entirely his own doing. To be the best you've got to keep a crowd on it's feet. To keep the crowd on it's feet you've got to play music that the crowd feels. And to do that you've got to be dynamic. So dynamic that you should be able to drop a song just seconds into it the moment you realise it's killing your crowd.

For argument's sake, let's assume DJs did actually have the power to completely dictate what we dance to in the clubs. Does that give them the power to make or break a music career? This also bring into question the statistics of our clubbing community and if that's the size of audience that one believes will make one's career then one would continue to be an upcoming artist really. I wouldn't claim to even imagine the feeling when an artist sees people dancing to your own music in a club. I can only compare it to seeing my byline for the first time many years ago. It must be awesome. Unfortunately by the time we hit the clubs on the other side of midnight most of us are too preoccupied and half-conscious that we will hardly take time to find out who sang the some we're dancing to leave alone remember to download it on iTunes the following day. So as a marketing platform that's one reason to question the club playlist. All this is under the assumption that the music actually fits into the DJ's music plan and it will sustain his busy dancefloor.

Every little helps. Definitely. But an artist sending the DJs to the naughty corner for not playing their music only makes you question how many avenues there is for an artist to plug their material. Unless of course the artist is close to the DJ so the artist thinks the DJ will give him a leg up. In which case it becomes more of a test of friendship than a missed opportunity for career development. The scary fact is that they (DJs) could choose to enjoy the comfort of the naughty corner. They don't need the artists yet, with their options limited in the Diaspora entertainment infrastructure, the artists would struggle to stay afloat without the DJs.

EAST AFRICAN ARTISTES & FANS IN SOCIAL MEDIA CAMPAIGN DEMANDING FAIR AIRPLAY ON INT’L CHANNELS

Unfair airplay of East African music videos on the continental channels is not something new. Musicians and fans have lost their cool over the so called monopoly by West African music played on these channels.

They claim that some videos played are of poor quality but these channels continue to give them massive airplay each day thus denying East African artistes chance to shine on the continent.

They point out MTV Base and Channel O that plays almost 90 percent of Nigerian music but they acknowledge Trace TV that tries to offer East Africans fair airplay.

East Africa demanding fair representation of EA Music on ChannelO & MTVBASE @DStv_Kenya Kenyan musicians Tupo? ‪#‎Wewantfairairplay

This morning we've come up with this campaign to acquire 'Fair Airplay' on these African music channels. In the above pic is DJ Joe Mfalme,a Kenyan DJ responsible for submitting videos and other music projects from East African artistes and making sure East African talents are exposed to Channel O Africa and MTV Base Africa.

I would like to inform you all that he is not doing enough (or rather totally nothing). We as a team (together with a few other guys) have come up to fight for the rights we were granted. Look here,we subscribe for these PayTV channels and I know there are contracts/agreements that were signed/reached at by music agents (e.g DJ Mfalme) in regard to how much exposure East African music should be pushed.

In return,we the fans subscribe to their channels to offer viewership since our region is part of their area of coverage. To our disappiontment however,you can spend an entire day watching Channel O and you will only watch 3 East African videos compared to a mindblowing figure of about 7 videos from Wizkid alone.

You can imagine. I know you're gonna come up with an arguement and say that these channels are local channels in Nigeria and S.A..but if so,then why do they sign agreements requesting for viewership from our countries? They want the exposure,right? So what makes them think we do not want to share the same spotlight?

They claim Channel O Africa plays all good videos from the African region;but Africa is not made up of Nigerian,Ghana and S.A. There are countries like Tanzania,Uganda,Rwanda,Burundi,D.R.C e.t.c. How can you make an African countdown and there's entirely not a single music video from East Africa? How? Is that fair? I don't think so too!

So,please let's join efforts and ask for one thing only. FAIR AIRPLAY. It was a marvelous Sunday for most of the Ugandan celebrities as they congregated for prayers at Pastor Wilson Bugembe’s church, Light The World in Nansana, one of the Kampala suburbs.

Pastor Wilson Bugembe who doubles as a gospel singer, whose songs have always taken the Ugandan entertainment industry both the secular and non-secular worlds by storm, decided to dedicate one Sunday almost every year to preaching reconciliation and encourage unity among local celebrities.

Dubbed Celebrity Sunday, it attracted several celebrities including politicians, musicians, herbalists and traditional healers, local event emcees, local radio and TV presenters, to mention but a few.

We started the year on a high in more ways than one. You know how Moze Radio and Weasel TV do it. Neera Neera concert was smoking! Being the first Ugandan gig of the year, it will probably be hidden at the bottom of the pile and forgotten in the next few months (what with the likes of Afrigo Band and Jose Chameleon all lined up in the next few months) but the Goodlyf boys kicked off our year in real style. The Manchester leg of the tour (the promoters chose to refer to their 2-date gigs in just two of UK's cities as a UK tour) was overshadowed by reports that they performed to just sixty people but who cares about such statistics if the sixty people limped home at sunrise after dancing themselves lame? We of London polished our dancing shoes regardless.

Much as their erratic behaviour sometimes seems to attract a bigger fanbase than their music, all their fiery behaviour seems to be forgotten when these boys step on stage. They started with songs as old as Nyambura and on their journey to their latest, Neera Neera, every song only re-ignited the crowd excitement. Their new collabo, Julayina, with UK-based VJ OJ along the way was also another way for them to identify more with the locals. Radio's intros are all that anyone who has any familiarity with the group needs to go wild. Suddenly Boleyn Banqueting Suite was too small,

You may say there is nothing special about but I'll just take a quick comparison with the other 'big 3'; Jose Chameleon has got the music and the repute but I've seen him struggle to sustain a crowd on his last visit to UK even when he returned after a change of clothes. Bebe Cool's love for himself on stage is enviable. So is that of his very loyal army of fans but let's face it, his name is bigger than his music. Does he really have the his to sustain an audience for over half an hour with his own music though? That's very questionable. Bobi Wine? He has got a few 'edutainment' hits but how far can they take him? I won't even get started on our divas.

Radio & Weasel were here last September performing with theatre group The Ebonies. You would have thought that would affect the turn out this time round. Maybe it did. The point here is that those who turned up had a swell time. You may say it is the double act advantage but we have seen cases of complete bands failing to lift a crowd. I reckon you could bring those boys back in three-months time and get a full house. That's how much they rocked Boleyn Banqueting Hall

SILK LIQUID ACACIA MALL OPENING NEXT MONTH

Last year, Club Silk expanded its wings by opening a whisky lounge at The Village mall in Bugolobi.

They had planned to open up another at Acacia mall last month; unfortunately that did not happen. Well, Silk management has been working on setting up the place and after the reception they received from their Bugolobi lounge, management plans on making the drinks there much more costly to weed out the wannabes.

A shot at the Bugolobi lounge is said to cost up to Shs 40,000. Star Trail shudders to think how much more it will be at Acacia mall. Remember Silk Liquid initially was supposed to sell foreign beer that could not happen because Kampalans love their local beer.

Star Trail took a tour of the Acacia mall place on Monday and it is much more spacious, the seats are cozier and the setup is more like a home private office. It is nice. So prepare to buy a beer at Shs 10,000 because the place is opening next month.

POLICE TO INVESTIGATE ‘BENEATH THE LIES’ SERIES THEFT CASE

Below is the official statement from the police about the theft.

Jinja Road Police station is investigating circumstances under which the house in which film crews of Kinetic and Savanna Moon were residing broken in and thugs made off with property worth millions of shillings.

The thieves broke into the house located in Lakeside Villas between 3:00 am to 4:30 am, on 30/12/2014 and stole property valued at US $76,000.

The properties stolen include camera math box, camera lens, camera body, desktop computers, laptops, DVD players and hard drives.
Police were informed about the incident and our detectives swiftly started investigations that led to the arrest of three suspects.
Three suspects are currently detained at Jinja Police Station to help with investigations.

Our investigations show that the burglary was organized.
At around 3:30am, thieves gained access into the house through the sitting room. They proceeded to a room where the gadgets were kept, packed everything and left the scene.

The thugs strike when the crew had just finished shooting the last episodes titled “Beneath the lies”, TV series that is air on Urban TV.
The thugs timed the crews when they had gone out to relax after a long day’s work.

Our officers are still scrutinizing CCTV footage to find possible clues.

Yesterday Savannah Moon Productions, Kinetic Management Group with Urban TV issued an official statement about the theft of their series.

Savannah Moon Productions, Kinetic Management Group with Urban TV regret to inform its viewers that the greatly anticipated Beneath the Lies TV Series that premiered on December 17th 2014 has been put on hold until further notice.

The series which had shown two episodes suffered a major setback when the premises of Kinetic and Savannah Moon, the producers of the show, were broken into late December 2014. The break-in resulted in a loss of footage and TV equipment, leading to the cancellation of the broadcast.

“This is regrettable because the series had built a large following after only two episodes”, Michael Owor, Urban TV Station Manager was quoted as saying. He added that he is hopeful that the producers will be able to continue production inspite of the setback

Iryn Namubiru’s ex-manager Thaddeus signs new talent to salvage his Management Company

Singer Iryn Namubiru recently fired her brother Thaddeus Mubiru as her manager and decided to sign to Grajoh Talent Management stating he had failed to market her internationally. The two musicians who hugged and performed each other’s songs live on stage on Boxing Day have been re-united by money according to our sources.

Bebe and Chameleone who hugged several times like they have done in the past and went through their musical journey from the times when they were in Nairobi reunited for an NRM gig. Sources have revealed that the two artistes still command a very big following in Uganda and joining all of them could help the NRM candidate for the 2016 elections get an enormous number of votes.
